A toilet is a plumbing fixture primarily intended for the disposal of human excreta: urine and fecal matter. Additionally, vomit and menstrual waste are sometimes disposed of in toilets in some societies. The word toilet describes the fixture and, especially in British English, the room containing the fixture. In American English, the latter is euphemistically called a restroom or bathroom. The latter term often describes a room that also contains a bath tub. A room with only a toilet and a sink is sometimes called a half-bathroom, a half bath, or a powder room. There are two basic types of modern toilets: the dry toilet and the wet (flush) toilet, the latter being the most commonly known and producer of blackwater. The dry toilet needs no plumbing for water input or evacuation, but is often coupled with a ventilation system. Prior to the introduction of modern flush toilets, most human waste disposal took place outdoors in outhouses or latrines. However, the ancient cities of the Indus Valley Civilization, e.g., Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, which are located in present day India and Pakistan, had flush toilets attached to a sophisticated sewage system—and other forms of toilets were used both in the time of the Romans and Egyptians as well. Although a precursor to the modern flush toilet system was designed in 1596 by John Harington, the toilet did not enter into widespread use until the late nineteenth century, when it was adopted in English upper class residences. "The Toilet Provision for Food/Entertainment Premises The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 places duties on employers to provide suitable and sufficient WC and wash facilities for employees. Further guidance can be found in the approved code of practice that supports the regulations and should be considered at the planning stage. In addition to the above, The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 allows Local Authorities to require the provision of sanitary appliances and associated facilities for use by the public (especially where food and drink is consumed on the premises). Applicants may wish to consider the guidance… [cont.] Answered by Roy < - Mon Aug 24 16:02:05 2009 Should public toilets be closed in order to save money and help pay the national debt? Q. They are desirable but arguably not essential--we have all ,or at least many of us have occasionally used a hedge or discrete corner to go the toilet perhaps we should be more honest about this and thus close the public toilets and find alternatives.Discrete alternatives, designated parks, alleyways ,quiet street corners etc Im not suggesting people hold it in I am suggesting people do it outdoors ! I though they all were; blame it on the anti-gay paranoia of the late seventies/early eighties...with the AIDS tabloid craze coming up behind us like - well...y'know. Remember the 'cottages' all over London which were being closed down every week, on account of people who live nearby calling the police whenever they saw a young man enter a bog a couple of minutes after an old 'suited gentleman' - or vice versa. See someone has mentioned they would have a pee at the well-kept Tesco or ASDA supermercados (I'm a Waitrose cottager, myself) - that's how it is nowadays...the original gay (not paedophile) paranoia, twinned with the mid-eighties AIDS press screaming got councils throughout the country closing down a great many -… [cont.] Answered by arthur_57 - Sun Apr 25 06:04:20 2010 How do I get my toilets to stop gurgling?
