Biology (from Greek βιολογία - βίος, bios, "life"; -λογία, -logia, study of) is the natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. The term biology in its modern sense appears to have been introduced independently by Karl Friedrich Burdach (1800), Gottfried Reinhold Treviranus (Biologie oder Philosophie der lebenden Natur, 1802), and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (Hydrogéologie, 1802).

Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines. Among the most important topics are five unifying principles that can be said to form fundamental axioms of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, gene theory, energy, and homeostasis. Subdisciplines of biology are recognized on the basis of the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the rudimentary chemistry of life; molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules; cellular biology examines the basic building block of all life, the cell; physiology examines the physical and chemical functions of the tissues, organs, and organ systems of an organism; and ecology examines how various organisms interrelate with their environment.

The classification, taxonomy, and nomenclature of biological organisms is administered by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, and International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria for animals, plants, and bacteria, respectively. The classification of viruses, viroids, prions, and all other sub-viral agents that demonstrate biological characteristics is conducted by the International Code of Virus classification and nomenclature. However, several other viral classification systems do exist.

What colleges have a really good biology program?
Q. I know that MIT has a good engineer program, but do they have a good one for biology if not are there any other college with a good biology department for undergrads.

A. Your best bet is to go with a school that has a medical school or offers a master in biology. But, understand something: MIT has great everything; most underrated school in the entire world.

Who is the founder of Molecular biology and what is it about?
Q. Can help me in this question? It is from an assignment of my biology class.
Asked by rudysophy - Thu Oct 18 19:32:14 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I hope this helps - good luck with your assignment! Molecular biology was established in the 1930s, the term was first coined by Warren Weaver in 1938 however. Warren was director of Natural Sciences for the Rockefeller Foundation at the time and believed that biology was about to undergo a period of significant change given recent advances in fields such as X-ray crystallography. He therefore channeled significant amounts of (Rockefeller Institute) money into biological fields.

How do I start my marine biology career so late out of college?
Q. I have a degree in Marine Biology. I graduated in 2004 from a great school but due to personal reasons, I had to put off my career in this field. I have not lost the passion for this and things in my life are getting to the point where I could finally begin to pursue my career. What can do so late out of college to begin? I feel like it's been too long since I've been in school, in labs, etc. Is there any hope?
Asked by Jess - Sun Mar 4 14:39:28 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You'll probably need to get an internship to get your start back into this career field. And of course there is hope! I also put my degree off, and evenutally got back into it. I was honest with my employer. Just tell them you are passionate about marine biology, but had to deal with some personal things for the past couple of years. They'll understand. Take care.
