Chinese martial arts, also referred to by the Mandarin Chinese term wushu (simplified Chinese: 武术; traditional Chinese: 武術; pinyin: wǔshù) and popularly as kung fu (Chinese: 功夫; pinyin: gōngfu), are a number of fighting styles that have developed over the centuries in China. These fighting styles are often classified according to common traits, identified as "families" (家, jiā), "sects" (派, pài) or "schools" (門, mén) of martial arts. Examples of such traits include physical exercises involving animal mimicry, or training methods inspired by Chinese philosophies, religions and legends. Styles which focus on qi manipulation are labeled as internal (内家拳, nèijiāquán), while others concentrate on improving muscle and cardiovascular fitness and are labeled external (外家拳, wàijiāquán). Geographical association, as in northern (北拳, běiquán) and southern (南拳, nánquán), is another popular method of categorization. From Wikipedia under the

Like I've seen many Karte learning centers/buildings but not one that says Kung Fu. Asked by Woke Up Dead - Fri Aug 22 13:22:34 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Karate= Hard Okinawan External Power oriented Kung Fu= Soft Chinese Internal for the most part. Speed oriented. Karate and Kung Fu aren't a style, they are a system of styles. Karate has many styles along with Kung Fu. Karate: Shotokan Karate Kempo Karate Ishin Ryu Karate and much more. Kung Fu: Wing Chun (What I take) Praying Mantis Tai Chi And hundreds more. Why is there more Karate than Kung Fu in America? After WW2 when the Americans defeated the Japanese, they had a check point in Okinawa and the Marines forced the Okinawans to teach them the art, then when they brought it back to America, they spread it and added the belt system to it. At the time, the Chinese prohibited teaching Kung Fu to westerners until Bruce Lee… [cont.] Answered by Phillip c - Fri Aug 22 13:42:10 2008 which kung fu style do you recommend i pick up? Q. I've been doing taekwondo for a bit, but I'm looking for something that's more practical for self defense in the streets. I'm really interested in kung fu, but I see that there are countless different styles. Which style deals with a good balance between kicks, punches, and weapons? I'm from New York and there are plenty of cowards who like to attack when they outnumber the person. I wanna be prepared to destroy a group of 4-5 haha. Thanks in advance! Asked by Elvin - Sun Oct 26 20:59:37 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wing Chun - No nonsense, streamlined, close quarters fighting style. Northern Praying mantis - Takes a while to get good at it, but once you do, you will be one bad dude. Shuai Jiao - actually Chinese wrestling. Has some devestating throws. Q. I am planning on advancing my kung fu skill. What country can i learn the best in it under a short period of time? Asked by Olusegun Feyisetan - Sun Dec 13 18:27:19 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Not "where", but "who". And what do you mean by "short period"? Compared to what? To me, 20 years to master a style in kungfu is pretty darn fast. No country can claim an exclusive title of having the best schools in kungfu, not even mainland China. To make a long history lesson short -- the Communist government of China outlawed the teaching of kungfu when they come into power during the late 40's and did not lift this ban until recently. During the prohibition on martial art, many masters who remained in China died off before they could pass on their knowledge. Even the famous Shaolin Temple is still in the process of rediscovering many lost aspects of kungfu. For example, there are no complete Chinese sword forms (kata's to you… [cont.] Answered by Ron - Mon Dec 14 20:51:32 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "kung fu" Martial arts gala packs punch - Xinhua
