What's the difference between Karate and Kung Fu?
Q. And why are there a lot more places to learn Karate than Kung Fu in America? Like I've seen many Karte learning centers/buildings but not one that says Kung Fu.

A. Karate= Hard Okinawan External Power oriented Kung Fu= Soft Chinese Internal for the most part. Speed oriented. Karate and Kung Fu aren't a style, they are a system of styles. Karate has many styles along with Kung Fu. Karate: Shotokan Karate Kempo Karate Ishin Ryu Karate and much more. Kung Fu: Wing Chun (What I take) Praying Mantis Tai Chi And hundreds more. which kung fu style do you recommend i pick up?
Q. I've been doing taekwondo for a bit, but I'm looking for something that's more practical for self defense in the streets. I'm really interested in kung fu, but I see that there are countless different styles. Which style deals with a good balance between kicks, punches, and weapons? I'm from New York and there are plenty of cowards who like to attack when they outnumber the person. I wanna be prepared to destroy a group of 4-5 haha. Thanks in advance!

A. Wing Chun - No nonsense, streamlined, close quarters fighting style. Northern Praying mantis - Takes a while to get good at it, but once you do, you will be one bad dude. Shuai Jiao - actually Chinese wrestling. Has some devestating throws.

A. Not "where", but "who". And what do you mean by "short period"? Compared to what? To me, 20 years to master a style in kungfu is pretty darn fast. No country can claim an exclusive title of having the best schools in kungfu, not even mainland China. To make a long history lesson short -- the Communist government of China outlawed the teaching of kungfu when they come into power during the late 40's and did not lift this ban until recently. During the prohibition on martial art, many masters who remained in China died off before they could pass on their knowledge.
