Verb

welding

  1. Present participle of weld.

Noun

Singular welding

Plural weldings

welding (plural weldings)

  1. A method of manufacture or repair involving joining two pieces of metal or plastic by fusion. Heat is normally used such as an open flame (i.e. acetylene, propane or butane), laser light or electric arc, and the fusion may be autogenous or with the addition of a similar substance to the weld pool

Some common styles used for metal welding are: Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by causing coalescence. This is often done by melting the workpieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool) that cools to become a strong joint, with pressure sometimes used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce the weld. This is in contrast with soldering and brazing, which involve melting a lower-melting-point material between the workpieces to form a bond between them, without melting the workpieces.

Gas metal arc welding

Many different energy sources can be used for welding, including a gas flame, an electric arc, a laser, an electron beam, friction, and ultrasound. While often an industrial process, welding can be done in many different environments, including open air, under water and in outer space. Regardless of location, however, welding remains dangerous, and precautions are taken to avoid burns, electric shock, eye damage, poisonous fumes, and overexposure to ultraviolet light.

Until the end of the 19th century, the only welding process was forge welding, which blacksmiths had used for centuries to join iron and steel by heating and hammering them. Arc welding and oxyfuel welding were among the first processes to develop late in the century, and resistance welding followed soon after. Welding technology advanced quickly during the early 20th century as World War I and World War II drove the demand for reliable and inexpensive joining methods. Following the wars, several modern welding techniques were developed, including manual methods like shielded metal arc welding, now one of the most popular welding methods, as well as semi-automatic and automatic processes such as gas metal arc welding, submerged arc welding, flux-cored arc welding and electroslag welding. Developments continued with the invention of laser beam welding and electron beam welding in the latter half of the century. Today, the science continues to advance. Robot welding is becoming more commonplace in industrial settings, and researchers continue to develop new welding methods and gain greater understanding of weld quality and properties.

How do you know how many volts & amps to use when welding different thicknesses of metals?
Q. If I have two 1/8 inch thick pieces that I am welding together doing a; butt weld, horizontal weld, vertical weld, corner weld, or a T-weld how do you know what the voltage and amperage are to be set at?
Asked by PAUL R - Sun Jul 29 17:58:41 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. It depends on what welding rod you are using. Most welding machines have a chart on them for that.

How do you calibrate the voltmeter on a miller millermatic 251 welding machine?
Q. How do you calibrate the voltmeter on a miller millermatic 251 welding machine. It is wired straight into the PC board and I do not see anywhere to adjust it. The machine is reading 33.5 volts and my calibrated fluke meter is reading 20 volts.

A. Is your fluke meter wired in parallel using the same connections as the volt meter? I'd look to replace it if it's that far off. Try allied-elect.com

How difficult is welding to learn/do?
Q. I'd like to do a few things around the house and to my RV, but I have no knowledge, is there a propane-torch level of welding that's strong? Meaning, do you have to invest in a lot of equipment and intense learning or can it be simple? Thanks.

A. Sorry - no propane torch welding! You can pretty much choose between Oxygen-Acetylene gas welding and electric arc welding. You won't learn to do either of these from a Vo-Tech school. Most Vo-Tech schools have gone to teaching only tig and mig welding. Oxygen-Acetylene welding uses a torch connected to a regulator which allows you to control the mix of oxygen and acetylene. This regulator is attached to an oxygen tank and an acetylene tank. Arc welding is done with an electric arc welder. See https://ssl.lincolnelectr ic.com/foundation/ and for more information. The best way to learn about welding is to look at welding magazines... as well as welding books at you library. If you just need a few things welded, it… [cont.]
